Thursday 8th May 2025 marks 80 years since VE Day. The Arctic Convoy Museum is commemorating this historic anniversary with a number of events.
During May, look out for our special commemorative banners which have been designed by the pupils of Bualnaluib, Poolewe and Gairloch Primary Schools. These will be displayed in Aultbea, Poolewe and Gairloch, alongside poppy nets made by local knitting groups. They will highlight the role that Loch Ewe played in WWII and act as a reminder that War Belongs in the Museum.
On Thursday 8th May, we are offering free entry to the Arctic Convoy Museum as a gesture of commemoration. This is a great opportunity to see our new displays.
A special Loch Ewe VE Day 80 commemorative service will take place at the Arctic Convoy Memorial at Rubha nan Sasan on Saturday 17th May at 11am – all welcome.
And throughout the summer months, there is the chance to see a special exhibition of paintings at the Old Schoolhouse Tearoom, Inverasdale. The watercolours on display were painted by Arctic Convoy veteran Jack Shirley from memory and based on sketches he made during his war service. They capture the everyday life of the sailors who made the perilous journey from Loch Ewe to the Arctic. Each painting is a snapshot of a journey from which many did not return.
